the official number from fox has it set at 235 million. with an unknown amount for advertising.
which puts it 'officially' behind spiderman 3 and pirates: at world's end.

but it's still hellaspensive.

... Anybody else heard of the "Post-Avatar Depression Syndrome"?

It was on CNN. I kid you not.

A post by a user called Elequin expresses an almost obsessive relationship with the film.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.'"

Other fans have expressed feelings of disgust with the human race and disengagement with reality

I WANTED to see the movie before this. Maybe I should rent it from the safety of home, so I'm not enveloped by a dark theatre.

I don't mean to be cruel, but I believe that the people quoted here probably have extended problems. If they weren't aware of them before, they've simply come to the surface.

Unless you have similar issues with reality, the movie is safe for seeing just as The Catcher in the Rye PROBABLY won't convince you to murder.

Still, this is a fascinating, if not sad, piece of information. I guess it's comparable to Cypher wanting to go back to the Matrix, or the phenomenon of born-again Christians. They take their current sub-par reality and substitute it for one of their liking. Also, the Matrix comparison may seem cheesy, but if you think about it, the realistic setting in Avatar is indeed comparable to the virtual reality in that movie, which was relatively speaking more desirable than living on rusty ships underground.

Discuss! This has tickled mah fancy. :D

after seeing it, i wanted to go, but knowing that it isn't real, means the only way i CAN go is to create it myself. someone pull out the science kit, it's genetic modification time.
i mean, gundams made me want to pilot a gundam. (and if the same didn't apply to you, you're a loser.) why shouldn't people want to go to an alien planet, full of extremely tall, small headed aliens?
the depression part, as slogra said, is probably due to another, older reason, that is being compounded and increased by this latest feeling of want. and because crazy people have difficulties in telling illusion apart from reality (although some have a problem with seeing the illusion at all, i.e schizophrenics can't see the concave face being convex.) they become even sadder.
one wonders how they'll feel when avatar 2 comes around.
